On International Women’s Day, Shankill’s most inspirational lady, Saidie Patterson was honoured with a Blue plaque at the Church whereshe attended. Dr. Myrtle Hill, Vice-Chair of the Ulster History Circle led the tributes, commenting that ‘Saidie Patterson was a larger than lifeperson and an enormous force for good. Her commitment to fairness and
equality in the workplace, and to the promotion of peace in our most troubled times made her a particularly important role model to be celebrated on International Women’s Day. Baroness May Blood who knew Saidie well said that she was honoured to unveil the plaque, and that Saidie would have been most humbled by all the attention she was receiving 33 years after her death.During her life Saidie had received 5 international peace awards andat the age of 69 was presented with the World Methodist Peace Prize. The Rev. Colin Duncan, Minister of Shankill Road Methodist Church warmly welcomed guests who included, Rev. Dr. Harold Good, a recipientof the World Methodist Peace Prize, Alderman Brian Kingston, Gillian Kingston of the World Methodist Council (no relation), William Humphreys MLA, and Anne Patterson from the Peace People.
